Troia is located between the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and the Arrabida National Park. This is an area of sand dunes and pines and Atlantic facing long, white, sand beaches – some of the finest in Portugal – where even in August you can be on your own. Troia has important archaeological sites, dating from Roman times when the peninsula was, in fact, an island called Ácala. Across the estuary lies the city of Setubal and a very distinctive lime green passenger and car ferry criss-crosses the estuary to link the peninsula with the city. It is easy to take the passenger ferry across the estuary, often seeing the resident dolphins en route, and spend the day wandering around Setubal and eating in one of the many harbour-front fish restaurants.
